About the Boise Poetry Slam.

  • Big Tree Arts, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organized to promote performance poetry for the Boise community. Prior to incorporation in 2007, we operated as the Boise Poetry Slam. Our mission is to promote the performance and creation of poetry and art while cultivating literary activities and performance events in order to build audience participation, stimulate creativity, awaken minds, foster education, inspire mentoring, and encourage artistic statement. In addition to holding the longest-running open poetry series in Boise, Big Tree Arts has been actively serving the Boise community since 2002.
  • The slam is held at the Neurolux on the third Monday night of each month. Check out our calendar to see when the next one will be.

Great stuff is happening this year.

  • Poetry Slam Delux at Neurolux, where poets can compete for $100 prize and to represent Boise at the the National Poetry Slam (August) and Individual World Poetry Slam (October). Third Monday of every month.
  • The Reading and Workshop Series, which brings in poets from around the country to workshop with locals at BSU and to perform at Poetry Slam Delux. The workshops are the same day as Poetry Slam Delux, 5 PM at BSU, but you have to check the calendar because they mostly only run during the school year. This is sponsored by the Idaho Commission on the Arts, The Boise Weekly, and Foerstel Design.
  • The Slam of Steel, an all-ages slam every second Tuesday at Woman of Steel gallery, 7 PM. All ages means anyone can come in, but we do not screen for content so only bring your kids if you're comfortable with them hearing strong language. There is a free workshop at preceding the slam at 6 PM.
  • The LoudWriters Program, which makes poetry slam accessible to Treasure Valley youth poets. It includes the Slam of Steel (above), the all-ages workshops at Steel (above), and free outreach to area high schools and junior highs where a poet will come to your school and talk about slam and give examples of slam so youth poets can come be part of the community too. Contact us if you want someone to come to your classes. This is sponsored by the Boise City Department of Arts and History.
  • That's it. We hope to see you soon!
