Sammo Slammo: every second Wednesday

Even Stevens (815 W. Bannock St. Boise, ID 83702) // Sign-ups at 6:30PM, Slam at 7:00PM // $3 at the door // All ages

Slam of Steel: every fourth Monday

Goldy's Corner (625 W. Main St. Boise, ID 83702) // Sign-ups at 6:30PM, Slam at 7:00PM // $3 at the door // All ages

THE RULES

  • Sign-ups open at each slam at 6:30PM for the first 10 poets. Sign-ups are on a first come, first serve basis. We will not accept any sign-ups before 6:30 on the night of the slam. If you're worried about getting a spot, we recommend getting to the venue at least 10 minutes early!

  • Poets have 3 minutes and 10 seconds to read a poem of their own creation. Points will be deducted for violating the time limit (.5 for every 10 seconds over the limit), or if poets use a prop or costume (be aware that anything that is not a part of your body or a mobility device that is intentionally gestured to or held up is considered a prop! Find the host or a staff member if you have questions about this).

  • Poets will be judged by 5 random members of the audience on a scale of 0.0 to 10.0. Judges evaluate qualities such as performance, content, and originality. The highest and lowest scores are dropped to give a poet a score out of 30.

  • The 5 highest scoring poets of the first round move onto the second round. All the same rules apply to the second round. The top 5's scores from both rounds will be added to give them their final score, and the 3 highest scoring poets will earn points towards our grand slam in the spring, as well as fabulous prizes!

  • A note on content: our slams are free speech events, but they are not freedom-from-the-consequences-of-your-speech events. If you are discussing graphic content (such as abuse, suicide, or violence), please consider providing a content warning before beginning your poem. A content warning will not count towards your time as long as it's mentioned first. Racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, or any other bigotry are not tolerated at Big Tree Arts events.
